Ally McCoist says Romelu Lukaku needs to improve next season and try prove himself as a success at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku’s difficulties during his first campaign back at Chelsea has been a regular topic of discussion, which isn’t a surprise when he cost a club-record £97.5million last summer.

The striker has 14 goals across all competitions so far this season, but that doesn’t quite tell the full story.

It’s been a tough ride for the 28-year-old where he’s struggled to fit the system of manager Thomas Tuchel. In fact, he’s had plenty of games in 2022 where he’s actually started from the bench.

He scored twice and impressed in the weekend’s 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton. Tuchel’s since hinted it’s very hard to drop him ahead of tonight’s Premier League match away to Leeds.

Ally McCoist says Romelu Lukaku needs to improve next season

McCoist is hopeful that Lukaku can reignite his Chelsea career by rolling his sleeves up:

“I hope so,” McCoist replied on talkSPORT when asked if Chelsea should bring Lukaku back into the fold next season.

“When he spoke to the media that has set him back. It’s probably really affected him mentally as well. It was a silly thing to do and it’s come back to bite him a lot harder than he ever thought it could.

“I really hope he rolls his sleeves up and says ‘I’m going to have a right go at Chelsea next year’.”

Momentum going into next year

Hopefully, Lukaku can end the final four matches of the 2021/22 campaign with a bang.

He’s got three league games left to try get the Blues a top-four finish, as well as a chance at silverware in this Saturday’s FA Cup final against Liverpool.

There are some Blues supporters that are unclear on if he’ll even be at the club next season, despite the fact he’ll have another four years on his deal.

It’s been reported that Lukaku wants to sit down with Tuchel this summer to discuss his future.
