‘I like a lot’: Phil Foden explains why he massively rates 23-year-old Chelsea player

Manchester City star Phil Foden has explained that he massively rates Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

Foden and Mount, who are both in Qatar right now as part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad, are two of the nation’s most talented youngsters.

Foden, 22, has been tearing it up as a Man City winger this season, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances so far.

Mount, who’s already played under two different Chelsea managers this campaign, continues to be one of his side’s brighter players during a challenging period.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder does not enter this international tournament in the same form as teammate Foden, but it would not be surprising if both have successful World Cups.

Both are still pretty young with big careers ahead of them, but they arrive on the World Cup stage with a lot of big-game experience already under their belts.

Foden has explained he’s a big admirer of Mount’s technical quality. Also, he rates Leicester City’s James Maddison after training alongside him in the England camp.

“Technically, it’s probably the best England squad I’ve seen. I like Mason Mount a lot and James Maddison as well, the way he plays — players who can receive it in the pocket on the half-turn and can make the killer pass or shoot from distance,” Foden said.

It’s true, this England group does possess a lot of individuals who are technically exquisite.

Will Gareth Southgate allow these forward-thinking players to shine on the biggest stage, though?

Mount, rather oddly, comes in for massive criticism from certain sections of the Chelsea fanbase.

However, you only need to listen to comments from his peers to recognise he’s the real package. For example, Raheem Sterling was speaking about his teammate’s massive potential earlier this week.

He’s definitely not immune from criticism for his performances because he’ll probably admit he’s been inconsistent so far this season. This is the club’s player of the year in the past two consecutive campaigns, though.

It’s only a matter of time before the creative playmaker rediscovers his best touch, which England will hope is out in Qatar.
