Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has heaped praise on Chelsea signing Nicolas Jackson.

The Blues signed the striker from Villarreal last month and he had a really good pre-season, which has not gone unnoticed it seems.

Discussing Nicolas Jackson, as well as another Chelsea attacker Raheem Sterling, in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson said: “I like Nicolas Jackson, and I think he’s a good player. I hope Raheem Sterling has a good season as well — he hasn’t really been at his best at Chelsea.

“He can make a difference for Chelsea and their top-four ambitions.”

Jackson managed to score a couple of goals during the Blues’ pre-season tour of America, dispatching against Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham, so the early signs are promising.

The pressure is on Nicolas Jackson

While it is early days, Chelsea need Jackson to deliver for them straight away, and some may be expecting him to after his performances in their recent friendlies.

Mauricio Pochettino is going to be without Christopher Nkunku for some time after the Frenchman underwent knee surgery.

It is a huge blow for the Argentine, with the former RB Leipzig man having also performed during pre-season.

The above means Chelsea will now be looking to Jackson to score a large portion of their goals as he leads the line for Pochettino’s side.

The Blues still have the likes of Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk in attack. They will be expected to perform much better this term after their struggles in the previous campaign.

Sterling netted just six times in the Premier League, while Mudryk is yet to open up his account in the division.

But naturally, with Jackson being the No.9, there will be an expectation for him to win his team points, especially after Nkunku’s injury.

With the transfer window still open, there is the possibility that Chelsea go out and buy another centre-forward. But if not, then all eyes will be on Jackson.
