Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has claimed that he already knew Enzo Fernandez was going to be a star before he even joined the club.

He told SportsCenter via All About Argentina that Fernandez had impressed him during the World Cup, when the Spaniard told everyone he knew that he was a massive fan.

The 22-year-old has hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge, with him playing near enough every minute since he joined the club.

This has not just been because of his club-record fee either. Especially in the new system, he has looked a fantastic player after less than two months at the club.

The speed he has managed to settle in England is what has caught many by surprise. There were of course fears about if he could live up to the price tag after limited experience at the top of the game.

Cucurella however perhaps saw it coming, saying he was extremely impressed with the midfielder during the World Cup.

He said: “I was watching Argentina because of Alexis, and I said; ‘I really like number 24, he’s very good’. And I didn’t know where he played. I kept watching Argentina and I told my family and friends with whom I watched the matches, ‘I like number 24”

Fernandez is currently back with the national team for the first time since winning the World Cup, sporting a new blonde look that was on show when he did join the Blues.

All eyes at Stamford Bridge will now be on the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, and the 22-year-old’s performance will be crucial in them getting what currently looks an unlikely path to the semi-finals.

He may well have a new partner in midfield for that game, with N’golo Kante close to making his return to the first team.
