Chelsea transfer target Maxence Lacroix played his first game of the 2026 World Cup, and immediately showed us why we have to sign him this summer.
The Blues have been linked with Lacroix as they continue to look to back Xabi Alonso with signings that will suit his back three system.
They have already secured a deal to bring in Marco Palestra, and with Lacroix being monitored, I took a look at him as he started against Norway for France at the World Cup.

Chelsea must sign Maxence Lacroix after star World Cup performance
While the game was highlighted by the attacking quality the tournament favourites have at their disposal, the Crystal Palace man put in an assured performance at the back.
There were questions asked of his defensive partner, Dayot Upamecano, for the Norway goal, but Lacroix was calmness personified. He completed 44 of his 46 passes.

It was also a very solid defensive display from the Frenchman, who registered two recoveries, two tackles and an interception, as well as three clearances.
In total, Lacroix made the joint-highest amount of defensive contributions in the game, even though he was not up against Erling Haaland.
He faced the tough task of competing in the air with current club teammate Jorgen Strand Larsen, although made sure any long balls didn’t have the desired impact for their opponents.
Even when things started to get tough and France were on the back foot, Lacroix showed his mentality and leadership skills by demanding more from those around him.
This is particularly impressive when taking into account this was his first start for his country in either a World Cup or European Championship.
Chelsea have 10 centre-backs – who are YOU getting rid of? ❌
Colwill and Acheampong are 'untouchable'.
William Saliba is a clear first-choice in the backline for France, although Lacroix has proven he may well be the best partner they have for him.
Chelsea scouts need to sit up and take notice – this is a player who will immediately lift the standards at the back, and should be their priority in the transfer market.
There will also be optimism that Lacroix looked very confident playing in a back four, after spending so much time in a back three under Oliver Glasner at Palace.
