Ian Wright claims £150k-a-week Chelsea player makes ‘too many mistakes’

Ian Wright has ripped into goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga by suggesting he’s a real weakness in the Chelsea team right now.

Kepa, who earns £150,000-a-week, has won back his starting position this season as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper.

The 28-year-old Spaniard does have the advantage that Edouard Mendy is currently sidelined through injury, but it’s been clear that Graham Potter has preferred the former since taking charge as head coach at Stamford Bridge in September.

Unfortunately, it’s been a difficult week for Kepa in-between the sticks.

He’s come under criticism for not intercepting crosses in games against both Fulham and Manchester City. Both occasions led to winning goals for the opposition, too.

Kepa Arrizabalaga criticism

Ian Wright has singled out Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper for some of his mistakes recently.

He’s given quite the firm assessment that the shot-stopper isn’t suiting the Blues.

“I’m looking at Kepa and I’m sorry man but it’s not working out. The man makes too many mistakes,” Wright said on the Wrighty’s House podcast.

“We’re looking at a Chelsea side where even if they’re playing well, I cannot as a Chelsea fan look at that goalkeeper and feel like he’s going to help us win a game. I can’t see it.”

Kepa’s never had a smooth ride during his years as a Chelsea player, so it’s no real surprise he’s a popular topic for discussion again.

It does feel like the cracks are beginning to appear again in his game.

The Sun claimed a couple of months ago that Chelsea were considering a revamp in the goalkeeper position in the summer to find a new number one.

Will the Blues go through with this, though?

If Kepa doesn’t tighten up again quickly, don’t be surprised to hear Chelsea fans rallying for a new keeper.
