Ian Wright claims Chelsea will go to the ‘next level’ with two key signings

Chelsea are way ahead of schedule of where most people thought they’d be this season.

The Blues went into this 2024/25 campaign with yet more uncertainty over them because many critics don’t like the way the young Chelsea squad has been assembled. On top of that, another change in the dugout during the summer meant Enzo Maresca took charge as a Premier League manager for the first time in his career.

However, Chelsea currently sit second in the Premier League table after 15 gameweeks, which has led to the media talking about them as potential title challengers.

Chelsea internally isn’t getting carried away by title talk. In fairness, there’s still such a long way to go, and the inexperienced group is mixing it up alongside some proven outfits.

Ian Wright tells Chelsea to make two signings

During a conversation on the Wrighty’s House podcast (11 December), Ian Wright suggested that Chelsea are still two players away from challenging right at the top. He thinks that the Blues need to add another goalkeeper and central defender to their starting XI.

“What I’d say with Chelsea, a goalkeeper and an experienced centre-half, I think takes them to the next level… I think they’re only missing a good goalkeeper and an experienced centre-half now to calm it down,” Wright said.

While the Blues score goals for fun under Maresca, it’s obvious that they can still significantly get better in defence. In fact, they’ve only kept three clean sheets in 15 league matches so far this season.

Craig Burley has told Chelsea to improve defensively, which seems to be a universal opinion.

Elsewhere, Pat Nevin has suggested Chelsea target Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite as a talented centre-back they should be targeting.

Chelsea may already have their solution

The centre-back partnership of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana has the potential to develop into a phenomenal defence, so bringing in a new defender to disrupt that would be a risk. It all depends on what kind of options are available in the market.

However, there’s no doubt that the Blues need to make a change in-between the sticks and replace Robert Sanchez as the first-choice goalkeeper.

It’s interesting that Chelsea keeper Filip Jorgensen, 22, has looked impressive whenever he’s played this year. He’s been comfortable with the ball at his feet and an excellent shot-stopper in his nine appearances this season across all competitions.

Julien Laurens has called for Chelsea to start Jorgensen in the club’s Premier League matches, so hopefully it’s a matter of time before Maresca makes the swap in net.
