Ian Wright hits out at 'unfair' criticism of Chelsea's Mason Mount
Ian Wright has defended Mason Mount as he sent a message to the Chelsea and England midfielder’s critics about the Jack Grealish rivalry.
Mount has previously said it himself; he never feels there is a rivalry between him and the Aston Villa ace.
“We are two different players and we do different things. We can play in different roles,” the 21-year-old told the media (via the Guardian) on Tuesday as he spoke about his favourite position in the team.
England’s win over Ireland on Thursday also proved it, as England manager Gareth Southgate named the pair in his line-up with Mount playing in a deeper role.
Former Arsenal striker turned pundit Wright was unimpressed with some of the abuse thrown at Mount recently.
He told ITV (via talkSPORT): “It’s disgraceful the way people have talked about Mason Mount getting his berth in front of whoever.
“Mason Mount is in there on credit and what he’s able to do.
“It’s unfair the amount of stick he gets for getting chosen by Gareth [Southgate].”
Blues icon Ashley Cole backed Wright and added: “I think the quality Mason brings to not just this England team, but the Chelsea team, he brings that energy, willingness to graft and run.
“That desire and work ethic, it’s a must, it’s the standard, but with quality, so I think it’s unfair to compare them [Mount and Grealish].”
Southgate’s decision to play Mount and Grealish together proved successful, after England cruised past Ireland with a comfortable 3-0 win.
While he is likely to make some rotation in the next couple of games against Belgium and Iceland, we may still see Mount and Grealish in the same line-up once again.
