Ian Wright insisted that there is very little Graham Potter could have done about Chelsea’s poor goalscoring form since the team created enough chances to win.
The Blues have scored just scored 23 goals in 23 matches in the Premier League this season — by far the lowest among the teams in the top half of the table.
To put it into perspective, Erling Haaland has already scored 26 goals this season, while Manchester City have 60 goals.
While Pep Guardiola’s side has created more big chances than any other team in the league this season (101), Chelsea have the second-most at 81 (per Opta).
So, why are Chelsea behind 12 teams in terms of goals this season, instead of being second-best in the league?
According to Wright, this is something that Potter could not have anticipated.

“It does, but at the same time, we’ve seen chances created,” the former Arsenal striker told Premier League Productions (via Optus Sport) when asked if Chelsea’s lack of goals continues to haunt Potter.
“I mean you can’t legislate for somebody missing chances. You can legislate for the team not creating chances.
“That’s what we’re seeing. We’re seeing chances created and people missing them.
“That’s obviously what Chelsea have to [work on].
“They have created enough chances where they should win games, and all of a sudden the momentum and the vibe in the stadium change.
“But at the moment, yeah, you have to say that [Potter] is under a little bit of pressure.”
The lack of goals has not been a problem for Chelsea just this season.
Bear in mind that Mason Mount, a versatile midfielder, was Chelsea’s top scorer in the league in the last two seasons.
This season, Kai Havertz leads Chelsea’s goalscoring charts in the league with five goals. When the team’s most prolific player’s scoring rate is one in four, five games, this is obviously a problem.
In the club’s defence, they have brought in as many as six new attacking players this season, including Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix.
Unfortunately, neither of them has proved to be a reliable goalscorer.
