Ian Wright can’t quite believe what’s happening to Chelsea duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in games this season.

He’s told ‘The Kelly and Wrighty Show’ that the midfield pairing is really struggling to cope.

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, both aged 22, are two of the most highly rated young midfielders in the sport.

However, there’s still some teething problems as they try to gel during their first season playing together.

You can understand why there’s so much expectation on their shoulders, with the South American pair costing well over £200million. Fernandez joined from Benfica midway through last season for £106.8million (Sky Sports). Meanwhile, Caicedo arrived from Brighton in the summer for a British-record £115million fee (Sky Sports).

Ian Wright criticism

Wright is stunned that a Chelsea midfield of Fernandez and Caicedo is being outplayed in many matches this campaign.

He said: “The fact is Pochettino and Chelsea, for me, are playing worse than [Manchester] United, and I’m not saying that disrespectfully. When you look at them, their organization and the way they’e playing.

“You’ve got two midfielders in there (Fernandez and Caicedo), £200million worth of midfielder that are being walked through. What is going on?”

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo struggling

We’ve seen in glimpses the individual talent of both Fernandez and Caicedo in recent months, but there’s certainly no consistency from either of performing anywhere near their best levels. It’s evident with the way that opposition teams carve through the heart of Chelsea in games.

Speaking on the ‘Obi One’ podcast recently, John Obi Mikel insisted that Fernandez and Caicedo deserve more time to show how good they can be.

The biggest problem is that the young duo are two of the first names on the team sheet and need to deliver their best right now.

We’re in the camp that the quality players will come good as well, but how much patience does everyone have?
