Journalist John Percy has claimed that Everton made a last minute attempt to sign Morgan Gibbs-White yesterday, before he eventually agreed to join Nottingham Forest.

The news comes as they are still trying desperately to hold on to Anthony Gordon, with Chelsea still firmly linked with signing him this summer.

The winger emerged as a shock target for the Blues over the weekend, with them now reportedly having two bids turned down by the Toffees so far.

However, the news that Frank Lampard’s side pushed so late in the piece for the big-money signing of Gibbs-White could suggest they are looking towards life without Gordon at the club.

The Blues could be set to lose a host of their wingers this summer, with Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi notably keen on spending some time away from Stamford Bridge.

Gordon could be close to Chelsea

With their undoubtedly a need for squad depth as the club look to fight on all four fronts this season, they may bring in Gordon to bring competition for the current established front three.

New signing Raheem Sterling is almost certain to be a starter throughout the season, and in the current system Mason Mount is an undroppable figure in the front three.

That leaves one role, the central position, up for grabs, with Kai Havertz not proving his finishing is the finished article up to now.

While Gordon has featured in the central role on occasion, he is far better out wide, where his direct running has seen him shine against many full-backs.

The Toffees inevitably missed out on the Gibbs-White signing, and it is currently unclear if they are to make a signing to eventually replace Gordon.

With his importance clear to see to Everton, they will certainly need a new star to save them from the relegation threat that hit them so hard last season.
