Conor Gallagher was especially buoyant by the arrival of his Crystal Palace co-worker and fellow Chelsea graduate Marc Guehi to the England set-up.

The national team’s cameras picked up the friends walking through the halls of St. George’s Park together for the first time as senior pupils.

From Chelsea to Palace and everything inbetween

Both players have followed almost an identical journey from promising youths to fully fledged Premier League all-stars.

They were nurtured at Cobham, before enjoying highly successful loan spells in the Championship.

Perhaps uncoincidentally, Gallagher and Guehi sat in the same Swansea City dressing room for a portion of the 2019/20 season.

Whilst the latter remained in Wales for another campaign, reaching the playoff final, Gallagher leapt into the arms of then top flight side West Bromwich Albion.

As Swansea failed to get promoted, and the Baggies were demoted, the two returned to Chelsea’s training ground feeling slightly deflated.

But their joy was restored pretty quickly, thanks to Palace taking a punt on the pair.

Patrick Vieira signed Guehi permanently for £18m (Guardian), then added Gallagher to his group on loan.

England all the way

Alongside the similarities at club level, the boys born into Blue have also shared the England scene throughout their careers.

The Under-17 World Cup winning squad were blessed by the two Chelsea youngsters.

Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions did not fare so well at the recent Under-21 European Championship, despite the presence of Gallagher and Guehi.

Now, the duo’s paths have crossed again, following Gareth Southgate’s decision to include them in the latest round of international fixtures.

Gallagher already has one camp under his belt, but this is a completely new experience for the other Palace prospect.

“Yeah, it’s great to have him here. Deserves it. He’s worked very hard and he’s showed what he can do and I’m buzzing he’s here,” said the midfielder on Guehi.

“Good! I’m just happy to be here. A privilege. Good to be with this guy as well,” replied the centre-back when asked about the feelings coursing through his veins.

Hopefully, we will see a glimpse of Gallagher and Guehi together on the Wembley surface over the next week.

England face Switzerland this Saturday, before taking on the Ivory Coast next Tuesday.
