‘I’m trying’: 23-year-old Chelsea player says he’s getting in the box more like Tuchel wants

Chelsea’s Mason Mount has claimed he’s trying to get in the box more this season to score goals.

Mount, 23, has continued in his role as a vital first-team player at Stamford Bridge.

The attacking midfielder has improved his contributions going forward this campaign, scoring 12 goals and making 15 assists across all competitions so far.

Incidentally, only teammate Kai Havertz has scored more Chelsea goals this season (13).

Mount’s been speaking in an interview about what he’s pushing to improve working under his manager Thomas Tuchel, which includes providing a greater offensive threat.

“He’s (Tuchel) pushed me up a bit higher than I’ve played over the last couple of years,” Mount said.

“You’re adapting your game, you’re learning different parts of your game. I’m in a winger/10 role now. Last season I played a bit more on the left, now I’m playing a bit more on the right.

“It’s different movement, different opportunities that come up in a game. For me this season, I’m trying to get into the box more, score more goals, be in the final third, be more dominant, be more of a threat.”

Chelsea progression

For certain, Mount’s getting better and better with more experience on the elite stage.

The England international is showing great maturity by tinkering his game to suit Tuchel’s system, something that plenty of his teammates can struggle with.

It’s great to hear that Chelsea bidder Todd Boehly reportedly wants to give Mount a new deal if he completes a takeover.

Mount, described as “absolutely outstanding” by Joe Cole, now looks like the all-round package.

It’s clear that he’s comfortable in deeper positions and playing as a more traditional central midfielder. However, he can be one of the first names in the team sheet in a more offensive role right now.
