‘Imagine’: Roy Keane claims he’s convinced PL striker would score 50 goals if he played for Chelsea

Roy Keane claims Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo would end up with 50 goals a season if he played for Chelsea.

Ronaldo secured a point for Man United at Old Trafford on Thursday night in their 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea.

The imperious 37-year-old attacker once again came to his side’s rescue, firing in a powerful half-volley after an excellent touch to control a chipped ball into the penalty area.

He’s now scored 23 goals across all competitions this season, including 17 in the Premier League.

There’s been a lot of criticism fired at Man United this campaign due to massively underachieving, but the Portuguese icon has at least maintained his extremely high standards since returning to the club.

Interestingly, Keane believes Ronaldo would score so many more playing in the current Chelsea side.

In fairness, the Blues attack wasted several opportunities in front of goal to cost them two points at Old Trafford. There is nobody in the group at Stamford Bridge that has anywhere near the same clinical touch as Ronaldo.

“He’s (Ronaldo) outstanding. It’s the hardest part of the game, putting the ball in the back of the net. That was his only chance tonight. You see the chances Chelsea were creating. Imagine if he was in the Chelsea team, he’d probably get 50 goals. He’s in a poor United side who aren’t creating many chances for him and he’s still producing,” Keane told Sky Sports’ coverage of Man United vs Chelsea (28 April).

Forget 50, Chelsea would love a 20-goal forward

It’s clear that Chelsea’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal is what’s causing the gap to the Premier League’s top two sides.

Mason Mount’s the top scorer for Chelsea in the league this season, hitting 10 top-flight goals so far. Incidentally, Man United’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick praised Mount for his performance yesterday.

The alarming truth for the Blues, though, is that the last player to hit 20 league goals or more for them in a single season was Diego Costa in the 2016/17 season, which is the last title-winning team at the Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku’s not turned out to be the goal machine everyone expected following his summer arrival from Inter Milan. In fact, the centre-forward would reportedly like to return to Inter Milan for next season.
