‘Interesting’: Stan Collymore has one big ‘worry’ over Mason Mount as he leaves Chelsea for Man United

Stan Collymore has admitted he has one major concern about Mason Mount as the Chelsea No.19 prepares to leave for Manchester United.

The England international had a medical with the Red Devils on Monday after a £60m deal was agreed – as detailed by Sky Sports.

So, what did Stan Collymore say about Mason Mount? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 52-year-old simply has no idea where the 24-year-old will fit in at Old Trafford.

Collymore told Caught Offside: “The thing with Mount is, no one seems to be quite sure exactly where his best position is. Hopefully Ten Hag has it worked out – you’d certainly like to think he has, but I worry slightly because I just can’t see where he’d play. Would he play centrally?

“You’d assume not because of Fernandes. So it’s likely he’ll play on the left of a midfield three and possibly drift in and out of the flank but that would require a good understanding with Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, and again, that isn’t something fans have often seen when the trio have played together for England, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Ten Hag manages the situation next season.”

In truth, it is difficult to say where Mount’s best position actually is – even after 129 Premier League appearances.

The Chelsea academy graduate played in five different areas last season – as shown on Transfermarkt – with the majority of his appearances coming in an attacking midfield role down the middle.

However – as Collymore states – that is where Bruno Fernandes operates, so Mount’s role at Manchester United really is a mystery.

Mason Mount confusion is not Chelsea’s problem

Fortunately for Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino, confusion over Mount’s best position is not their issue.

What Chelsea fans should focus on is the fact that £60m is arriving at Stamford Bridge for a player who scored just three goals in 35 appearances last season, and only has 12 months remaining on his contract.

When you consider those facts, it is remarkable business by Chelsea – to say the very least.
