Chelsea have seen their form dip drastically in recent weeks. They have picked up just three points from a potential 15 in their last five league outings, but one player has provided some hope in a difficult time for the Blues.

That player is Mateo Kovacic. The midfielder was on-loan at the club last season from Real Madrid, before moving to Stamford Bridge permanently last summer. Some fans were unconvinced by the Croatian and did not support the signing. This opinion is likely to be very different now.

Kovacic’s ability to move in tight spaces and quickly turn defence into attack is something no other Chelsea player possesses. It gets fans on their feet and gives the team the option of a quick counter-attack.

His end product was questioned last season, with the 25-year-old failing to score in 21 league starts. He also provided just two assists in this time and some fans felt this was not good enough for a central midfielder. His attacking output has improved this season. In just 12 league starts, Kovacic has scored once in the league and provided two assists.

However, there is more to his game than this. He breaks up play very well and boasts over 100 recoveries and duels won this season. He is a key link between the defence and attack and is crucial to the way Lampard wants his side to play.

The Croatian was rested against Bournemouth, and the Blues suffered yet another defeat. Mount played in Kovacic’s absence and fans were not happy with his performance.

After splitting fans’ opinions in his first year, Kovacic has become an indisposable member of Lampard’s Chelsea side this season. Keeping him fit is crucial if the club are going to achieve their target of Champions League qualification next season.
