Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has suggested that Chelsea have made a mistake by allowing Romelu Lukaku to leave the club during the summer.

Romelu Lukaku joined AS Roma on loan in the last transfer window and Callum Wilson thinks he is exactly the kind of forward that Mauricio Pochettino needs right now.

Speaking on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, the Newcastle star said: “I think they still have Lukaku on their books. It is incredible, because he is an out-and-out goalscorer. The kind of striker I’m talking about, he’s not going to play pretty football but he will bully defenders and stick the ball in the back of the net and ultimately that’s what they are missing.

“I think they have scored five goals this season. I saw a stat and I think [Erling] Haaland has outscored them. That’s unlike Chelsea, especially with the money that they have spent.”

Chelsea’s lack of goals has seen them really struggle in the Premier League this season.

They currently sit in 14th after winning just one match so far. They are faring much better in the Carabao Cup, beating Brighton & Hove Albion last night to progress to the fourth round of the competition.

Romelu Lukaku an out-and-out goalscorer

Wilson is not wrong. Lukaku is a striker who definitely guarantees you goals when he is playing.

When you look at Chelsea’s current team and their struggles this term, of course they could do with a forward like the Belgian.

However, Lukaku did not want to be at Stamford Bridge last season, joining Inter Milan for the 2022/23 campaign, and that has obviously not changed following his loan move to Roma.

Ultimately, the 30-year-old is not going to be the man to solve Chelsea’s goalscoring problems.

He could prevent them from going out and spending another £100m on a No.9, but it would be a surprise if that happened. Lukaku, it seems, does not want to have anything to do with Chelsea, and you just cannot see that changing considering everything that has happened.
