Alan Shearer has been speaking about Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer and his role in England’s quarter-final triumph at Euro 2024.

England’s game against Switzerland went all the way to penalties, with Gareth Southgate’s men coming out on top.

The Three Lions managed to score all five of their spot-kicks, and it was Cole Palmer who got the ball rolling after stepping up first.

It was not a surprise to see the 22-year-old beat Yann Sommer.

He had a one hundred percent record for Chelsea last season and had already scored a penalty for England this summer in a friendly.

Alan Shearer on Cole Palmer

It definitely was not a shock to see Palmer dispatch his spot-kick.

However, it was a bit of a surprise to see him go first. After all, this is only his first international tournament.

It is something that Shearer has been quick to highlight, with the Newcastle United legend having really enjoyed watching Palmer score the first penalty of the shoot-out.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “What about Cole Palmer? Cole Palmer hadn’t even played for England up until what, two, three months ago. Now he’s England’s first penalty taker and it looks as if he’s playing in the park with his pals! It’s mad, isn’t it?

“I mean… to go, ‘Give me the ball, I’ll have it’ and walk up there. It’s just strut, isn’t it? It just made me smile.”

Chelsea had chance to sign another former Manchester City academy player

Chelsea signed Palmer from Manchester City last summer, and that deal has worked out well for the Blues, Palmer and now England.

He was incredible for Chelsea last season, scoring 25 goals in 45 appearances, which helped him earn a call-up to the Three Lions’ squad for the Euros.

And according to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have been given the opportunity to sign another player formerly of City’s academy.

Phillips recently claimed that Jadon Sancho was offered to Chelsea, but the Blues were not interested in bringing the Manchester United outcast to Stamford Bridge.
