‘It was true’: Agent claims player who left Chelsea last summer could have joined Manchester United

Joao Felix’s agent Jorge Mendes spoke to Manchester United about a move after the forward’s exit from Chelsea.

That is according to former Atletico Madrid winger Paulo Futre.

Chelsea decided against signing Joao Felix permanently after his loan at Stamford Bridge and Futre recently told Cadena Ser that he had a conversation with Mendes where the super-agent told him that he spoke to United about his client.

“When Joao said he dreamed of playing for Barca, I began to live a nightmare that lasts to this day,” Futre said. “I called him [Mendes] and told him that the statements that Joao had made were his doing and he said no.

“We argued on the phone and he told me that he had spoken to Manchester United. I verified what he told me because I have friends and it was true.”

Felix eventually went on to join Barcelona, where he is currently thriving. The 23-year-old managed to grab a brace in his side’s Champions League opener against Antwerp last week.

Joao Felix relieved

Felix will be glad that he has moved to Barcelona instead of signing for United or remaining at Chelsea.

The Spanish side are doing well under Xavi, while United and Chelsea have struggled this season, especially the latter.

The Blues sit 14th in the table with just five points to their name. They also find themselves without European football.

With Christopher Nkunku currently out injured, maybe Mauricio Pochettino could have done with Felix, though the Argentine does have Cole Palmer who can play in the position just behind the striker.

For whatever reason, though, Chelsea did not want to keep hold of the Portugal international, who is probably not too upset about that now he is at Barcelona.

It is only a loan, however. If Felix wants to remain at the Spotify Camp Nou, then this loan needs to go much better than the one he had in west London.
