Rob Green praised Chelsea’s Mason Mount after his eye-catching performance in the Champions League against AC Milan.

The Blues put in yet another impressive display last night under Graham Potter, securing a fairly comfortable 2-0 away victory against Milan at the San Siro.

It means the Premier League side now sit top of Group E in the Champions League group stages.

It’s been a really positive start for Potter as Chelsea’s head coach, with a few individuals now starting to grow into key figures for him.

Mount performance against AC Milan

BBC pundit and former Chelsea keeper Green believes that Mount was a huge standout on Tuesday night in Italy.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder was involved in both of his side’s goals during the first-half against Milan. He was described as “fantastic” by his manager after the game, too.

In particular, Green highlighted that Mount has a great relationship on the pitch with Mateo Kovacic.

Kovacic, 28, is a talented Blues midfielder that always tries to be progressive with his passes, so Mount can benefit from that when he’s picking up pockets of space between the lines.

“Mason Mount was brilliant whilst he was on the pitch and has an understanding with Mateo Kovacic. We were saying before the game how they control the game in that midfield because they knew that Milan would do something different,” Green said on BBC Radio 5 Live (10:09pm, 11 October).

He added (10:25pm): “It’s brilliant to see (Mount’s performance). What’s great is that the way Chelsea play and the width that the full-backs use when they do play with a three at the back allows the space for holes to appear that Mason Mount can find.”

Mount and Kovacic are both great technical players in possession, so the duo can link up well in certain areas of the pitch. You can definitely throw Jorginho into the mix, too.

The key for Potter moving forward will be developing all these different Chelsea combinations across the park.

It’s pretty evident that the aforementioned duo are early favourites for Potter. Kovacic has started four of the five games under the new boss, while Mount has started all of them.
