Jamie Carragher has said that people should not write off Chelsea’s Timo Werner going into the new season.
A lot of attention will be on how Werner gets on during his second season at Stamford Bridge, especially now that centre-forward Romelu Lukaku has joined the Blues squad.
Werner, who got 12 goals and 15 assists last year, made some strong contributions during his debut campaign with Chelsea. However, a lot was made at times over the amount of goalscoring chances he missed.
The 25-year-old speedster played in some different attacking positions last term. For example, there were occasions he popped up centrally to spearhead the attack. In contrast, he found some success as an inverted winger drifting infield from the left.
Pundit Carragher feels the Germany international can still offer a lot to Thomas Tuchel’s squad in the 2021/22 season. He particularly loves the pace in his game.
“I wouldn’t write Timo Werner off because that pace that he’s got is really dangerous and you wouldn’t want to play against it,” Carragher told The Overlap.
“That can still be a huge asset for Chelsea. Those players who play behind the striker, a lot of them are very similar.”
Timo Werner can adapt to key role
Chelsea fans have been left scratching their heads during the Tuchel era so far trying to predict the XI.
It’ll be a surprise if Lukaku doesn’t become the first name on the team sheet as a central striker, which will leave room for two attackers either side of him.
Werner has the pace and directness to really benefit Chelsea as a left-forward.
His biggest obstacle is that he’s competing with the likes of Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech for a starting position.
