Jason Cundy says why Enzo Maresca had to go and tells Chelsea what they have to do next

Enzo Maresca’s name remains in the headlines after his departure from Chelsea on New Year’s Day.

While it was widely reported that Maresca’s relationship with the club was breaking down, his exit earlier this week came as a surprise.

Many expected the 45-year-old to leave at the end of the season, but his job became untenable.

Enzo Maresca at Chelsea:

91 games
55 wins
16 draws
20 losses

Is this a step backwards, or another exciting young manager who will hit the ground running at Chelsea?

Jason Cundy claims Enzo Maresca had to go after falling out with everyone

Plenty of Chelsea supporters would have wanted Maresca to stay at the club. After all, he guided the Blues to the Club World Cup and Conference League trophies last season.

Cundy, though, thinks the Italian and Chelsea had to go their separate ways because of his poor relationship with those at the club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former defender said: “You can’t change the past. It’s happened. Maresca has fallen out with everyone, doesn’t want to be there, he’s got to go. That decision has been made.

“Once you move forward, you’ve got to then try and have some continuity and the continuity is what Strasbourg have been doing and that Maresca has left.”

While Cundy would now like to see Chelsea display some continuity, that is going to be difficult. Maresca’s departure proves that.

Chelsea’s won’t ever have continuity under current structure

Chelsea have too many sporting directors; it is as simple as that. There is also too much interference from the owners, or at least in Maresca’s case.

Ultimately, with so many opinions to be heard, there are going to be disagreements and someone left unhappy, most likely the manager.

Coaches are not going to want to work under conditions like that and will simply leave the club, as Maresca did.

Having fewer cooks in the kitchen may help, while Rosenior or whoever takes charge will also benefit from Behdad Eghbali not constantly getting involved.

But what are the chances of Chelsea changing how they do things? They are very slim, so do not be surprised if Rosenior or someone else finds themselves in the very same situation as Maresca was this time next year. If you are a Chelsea fan, you have to be worried right now, though such drama at the club is nothing new.
