Jason Cundy thinks 24-year-old played his best ever Chelsea game in Liverpool draw

Jason Cundy thinks Marc Cucurella delivered his best performance in a Chelsea shirt during Saturday’s draw against Liverpool.

Cucurella, 24, has had an inconsistent start to his Blues career since joining from Brighton last summer.

He’s been axed from the starting line-up in the last few games, but Graham Potter recalled him to the XI during this afternoon’s 0-0 draw away to Liverpool.

Cundy actually believes it was the defender’s most impressive display of the season:

“Cucurella, no question, best performance in a blue shirt,” Cundy said, as quoted by the club’s official YouTube account.

Marc Cucurella impresses

Cucurella delivered the sort of steady and tidy performance this weekend that he really needed.

The Spanish left-back passed the test against one of the Premier League’s elite winger in Mohamed Salah, which should do a lot for his own confidence.

It still wasn’t the kind of energetic and all-action contribution he was delivering in Brighton colours last season. There’s no doubt Chelsea fans will take real encouragement by what they saw from their £110,00-a-week full-back, though.

With Ben Chilwell now back in training as he recovers from an injury, Cucurella will know the competition for a regular starting position will become even tougher.

The rashness that Cucurella was guilty of in opening stages of the season didn’t really exist on the trip to Anfield, so let’s hope he can kick on now to try build some momentum.

His mega £60million price tag is a big reason behind the spotlight regularly shining on him for criticism. However, Potter has proven in the past he can get the best out of him.

The 24-year-old is competing for the left-back spot with Chilwell, as well as emerging youngster Lewis Hall.
