Jermain Defoe picks Chelsea player to start first World Cup game, but drops him for knockout stages

Jermain Defoe has selected Mason Mount to start England’s World Cup opener, but not the knockout rounds.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 last night, Defoe announced his preferred Three Lions XI for the first game against Iran, one that included the Chelsea midfielder.

Like every member of Gareth Southgate’s squad, Mount will be aiming to make the maiden 11 in Qatar.

If the England manager was basing his selection on club form, the Cobham academy graduate might miss out.

Yet, Southgate is extremely loyal to those who have rewarded him in the past.

His 26-man squad selection suggested that, with the likes of Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling making the cut despite domestic struggles.

Will Mount make England’s XI?

Mount is another who has regularly performed well for his international coach.

Trust remains a massive marker for Southgate, hence why the Chelsea player is in a good position to face Iran.

If it were down to Defoe, the 23-year-old would be in the initial XI this time next week.

“I’m going 4-3-3. Jude Bellingham as a six, then (James) Maddison and Mount. I’m going for an attacking midfield,” explained the former striker.

“I think we are obviously going to dominate the ball, should have more possession.”

Clearly thinking as a forward, Defoe has thrown all defensive thoughts out of the window by partnering Mount and Maddison together.

Many believe the two Ms will be fighting for the same position, not sharing it.

But in the eyes of the ex-Tottenham Hotspur attacker, this duo is only for the group stage.

Permitted England make it to the round of 16, Defoe decided to drop both Mount and Madison in favour Declan Rice in a 3-4-3 formation.
