Joe Cole has rallied for Mason Mount to be recalled to the Chelsea starting line-up.
Mount, 24, was benched for a second consecutive game last night, featuring as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
The attacking midfielder came off the bench in last weekend’s Premier League draw with West Ham as well.
Graham Potter has relied on the England international as one of his key individuals since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but he’s come out of the firing line in the past week. It’s no coincidence others are getting a chance while his form is indifferent, too.
Mason Mount recall
BT Sport pundit and former Chelsea star Joe Cole is convinced that Mount should soon be back in the Blues XI.
He’s confident that the playmaker can add the kind of personality that’s needed during a difficult period.
“I feel like you’ve got to get Mason Mount in the team, particularly in difficult moments,” Cold told BT Sport 1 (10:27pm, 15 February)
“You want personality. Sometimes you go with personalities above ability, although I think Mason Mount is more than capable of playing in this team. He’s outstanding.
“I think he’s a personality that would lift the crowd. They’ve got Southampton at the weekend at Stamford Bridge. They need to win, and they need to win well.”
In our view, Potter has been well within his right to drop Mount lately.
There’s no way he should get back into the side in the No.10 position, with the “really impressive” Joao Felix pulling the strings in there.
If you’re looking at recalling Mount, he can enter the action as a wide player like he did against Dortmund. He’s possibly an option as an out-and-out central midfielder if the manager is feeling brave, too.
Hopefully, this mini break for Mount can be the perfect motivation he needs to get back to his very best.
The club’s two-time player of the year is going to add so much to this struggling Chelsea side if he can perform anywhere near his best, so playing him this weekend against Southampton may be a fair suggestion. Incidentally, he’s unavailable for the second leg against Dortmund through suspension.
