John Terry believes that Chelsea hold a current Premier League record that may never be broken.

While this current Blues squad is young and unproven, there’s been some spectacular teams assembled at Stamford Bridge over the years. In particular, the London club has been a powerhouse in the 21st century.

John Terry is one of so many Chelsea legends to play for the club during a golden period. Remarkably, the retired defender won 15 major trophies with them after coming through the academy.

Chelsea record from 2004/05 season

Chelsea set an incredible defensive record in the Premier League two decades ago that is still currently standing today.

In the 2004/05 campaign, which was Jose Mourinho’s first year at the club, Chelsea only conceded 15 goals en route to winning the division title.

It helped that they had a centre-back partnership of Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, while prime Petr Cech was behind them in goal.

It’s quite telling that this modern day Chelsea side has leaked eight goals in the first seven matches. Speaking recently via Sky Sports, Paul Merson urged Chelsea’s defence to stop playing out from the back so much.

John Terry doubts record will be beat

Terry has reflected this week on the historical Chelsea side that set the record for the least goals conceded in a single Premier League season. Interestingly, he’s not sure that any team will ever be able to concede fewer in a 38-game campaign.

He wrote on Instagram: “I recently got sent this list of the 15 goals we conceded in 2004/05, I can’t help but be annoyed but also very proud to be part of a great team. Going over the games and goals in my head thinking this should be 10 or less. Records are there to be broken, but I’m not sure 15 goals conceded in the Premier League will ever be beat.”

We’ll see over time if any side can get close to Chelsea’s defensive record of the least goals conceded.

For what it’s worth, Liverpool have started this new Premier League season by conceding only two goals from their opening seven games. Next, they host free-scoring Chelsea straight after the international break.
