John Terry thinks he knows the real reason Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea over Arsenal

Morgan Rogers’ move to Chelsea was finally confirmed on Tuesday night, three days after reports emerged that the England star had chosen the Blues over Arsenal – and John Terry has had his say.

The most expensive Englishman in history, 23-year-old Rogers joins Chelsea for a remarkable £117m. Perhaps even more surprising is that Chelsea are paying the fee in one lump sum, not with add-ons.

It sees Chelsea break their own transfer record, previously held by Moises Caicedo, while Rogers is now the fourth-biggest deal in history. Only Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Isak have cost more.

Now, Rogers joins Chelsea as the club’s second summer signing, picking Chelsea over Arsenal. It is even claimed that PSG and Manchester United showed interest in the player before he stumped for the Blues.

John Terry knows why Morgan Rogers has chosen Chelsea

Many see it as a real coup for Chelsea to fend off the interest of the Premier League champions to land Rogers, especially with Xabi Alonso’s men failing to qualify for European football ahead of 2026-27.

But of course, and especially with a £117m deal, finances will have played a big part, and that includes the wages on offer to Rogers. Speaking on his TikTok, John Terry thinks wages will have tempted Rogers.

“But, listen, to be honest, if you’re him, you’d have probably gone Arsenal. So the numbers must have been pretty big. But I’m excited to have him. I think he’s a good player,” Terry said after Rogers’ arrival.

He believes Rogers is better than Chelsea’s current attackers: “I think he’s gonna give us better than what we’ve got at the moment. I think he’s a good addition to the squad, and I’m actually excited to see him.”

Is Rogers now Chelsea’s best attacker?

Without a doubt, the World Cup ace is right up there. Many will expect more from Rogers, especially given the transfer fee, than the likes of Estevao, Pedro Neto, Geovany Quenda, Liam Delap and others.

But the stats prove that Rogers was actually a better player in the Premier League than anything the Blues had to offer last season, other than Joao Pedro, who won Chelsea’s Player of the Season award.

Indeed, such was Rogers’ form that he was not far off Pedro, who is obviously a striker. Rogers sits deeper and contributes more to the play than that. Rogers will need to replicate that form in a Chelsea shirt now.

Rogers is expected to link up with the Chelsea squad after their tour of Australia and Asia, with Rogers going the distance at the World Cup with England. It might not be for a couple of weeks until he arrives.
