Jorginho insists he is on board with Timo Werner’s appointment as Chelsea’s new penalty taker, after the Germany international successfully executed two penalties in their 3-0 win over Rennes.
Blues manager Frank Lampard previously said he would discuss the penalty taker candidate with the team and we now have the answer.
Werner didn’t waste his chances as he netted twice from the spot on Wednesday.
Jorginho, who was the previous regular penalty taker, reacted professionally and said he didn’t mind passing the baton to his new teammate.
“He [Werner] took the penalties and he scored and all of us are happy,” Jorginho told Chelsea’s official website after the game.
“It doesn’t matter who scores. He was wanting to take these penalties and I have no problem with that. The most important is that we score, it doesn’t matter who.
“That was decided before the match, and he scored, that was the most important thing so we are all happy.”
It is fair to say Werner deserves to take the mantle. Not only did he take penalties at his previous club RB Leipzig, he has also won the most penalties at Chelsea so far (four in all competitions).
Werner himself praised Jorginho’s reaction, explaining why the decision is important for him and opening up about his goal tally target this season.
“I’m happy about that and happy Jorginho is cool with that,” he said after the game.
“It is another point that speaks for our team, that we are not selfish, we are already pulling together and wanting to go in one direction and it is very good.
“I think when you want to score 20 or more goals [by] the end [of the season], you have to take a few penalties in the season, that is the thing that gives the strikers the goals to get to the high level.”
