Chelsea have had a host of top-class managers at the helm at Stamford Bridge, however one name stands above the rest.

Jose Mourinho is widely-regarded as the most impactful figure who has sat in the hotseat in West London, with him leaving an impression on those who played under him.

Frank Lampard was left in tears when the Portugal man was sacked for the first time by the club, however he left with a legacy of finally bringing a stream of regular trophies to the club.

Mourinho was in charge of a side who currently hold a Premier League record that is unlikely to be broken. His league-winning side of 2004/05 conceded just 15 goals across the 38 game season.

Going back more than 20 years though, there was certainly an element of risk about hiring ‘The Special One’, even after leading Porto to an unbelievable Champions League triumph.

Chelsea fan told Jose Mourinho not to become club manager

Mourinho was selected by Roman Abramovich to led the Blues in the wake of Claudio Ranieri, who had just earned them their won qualification to play amongst Europe’s elite.

Some supporters of the club were seemingly not so keen on the appointment. Mourinho recalled to The Telegraph that the first fan he interacted with told him that they didn’t want him to take over at Chelsea.

He said: “I had the feeling that Roman wanted fundamentally a change of mentality. I remember the first time I went to Stamford Bridge was before the Champions League final [with Porto]. I qualified for the final on Tuesday and on Wednesday I went to Stamford Bridge for Chelsea-Monaco.

“The first guy that came to me told me, ‘We don’t want you here, we love Ranieri.’ That was my first experience of Stamford Bridge.”

Jose Mourinho’s record at Chelsea

Over two stints in charge of the club, Mourinho won three Premier League trophies as well as an FA Cup and four League Cups, bolstering his personal trophy cabinet significantly.

Across his first spell at Stamford Bridge, ‘The Special One’ picked up an average of 2.22 points per game, while his second reign saw him pick up 1.96 points in each outing.

With that time in charge bringing his record down, the Portuguese coach remains second in the list of most succesful managers in charge of the club.

Avram Grant has the most points per game in Chelsea history, despite only being with the club for the rest of the season after Mourinho was first sacked.
