Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Frank Lampard is expected to revert back to a back three formation tomorrow night against Real Madrid tomorrow night.

He told GiveMeSport that the temporary manager had already considered sticking with the formation before the Wolves game, but elected to return to a back four.

Lampard used the game at Molineux to wisely rest some of his key players ahead of the most important game of the season against Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Ben Chilwell and N’golo Kante did not start, with them almost certain to be back in the first XI tomorrow night.

While some of the personnel were changed from where Graham Potter had left off, the interim boss also switched the system to a back four to no avail, as the Blues lost 1-0.

Lampard to revert to back three

Now though, Phillips has claimed that it would be very surprising if Lampard did not revert to the system which has seen them achieve joy in the competition so far.

He said: “Lampard changed the formation to his preferred 4-3-3, but I understand that him and his team had also heavily considered sticking with a back three and I’d be very surprised if they don’t revert to that for the Real Madrid game on Wednesday night.”

The club’s undoubted best result of the season came in the last round of the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund.

After defeat in the first leg, a host of sensational individual performances helped the Blues overcome their deficit, keeping Potter in the job for the time being.

The winner of the past two Champions Leagues has come from the winner of this tie, and it being played for the third time in as many years brings plenty of intrigue about what is to come.
