Trevoh Chalobah’s omission from the Chelsea squad on Saturday afternoon was purely a selection decision.
Chalobah, 22, was a rare absence from the match day squad today in the Premier League match against Brentford, something he may quietly be pleased about.
The Blues suffered an embarrassing 4-1 home loss against London neighbours Brentford, despite the fact they went ahead through Antonio Rudiger’s goal.
It’s a result that will encourage the teams below them. Also, it’s not ideal ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed in his post-match interview that the absence of defender Chalobah was only a tactical choice. Therefore, the 22-year-old Englishman should hope for a return in midweek in the Champions League.
“Just selection. We decided to play with a back four and we chose our four central defenders,” Tuchel said when asked about Chalobah’s omission against Brentford.

Chelsea defence collapses
It was a really poor display at the back from the Blues today, something fans are not used to watching too much.
It was a very experienced back four of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso that started the game. However, individual errors and a lack of sharpness cost them dearly.
Everyone knows the success this side has had in a back three, which is why expect Tuchel to return to that system against Madrid.
Chalobah missed out to fellow defenders Reece James, Malang Sarr and Andreas Christensen on the substitute bench today, so his return is not a certainty. He’s played 26 games across all competitions this season, though.
