Kai Havertz is in contention to achieve something soon that no Chelsea player has managed since 2018, which is win the Premier League’s Player of the Month award.

In fairness, Blues teammate Trevoh Chalobah also has a chance after being included in the nominees for March’s individual award.

The Chelsea pairing are joined on the shortlist by Aston Villa’s Matty Cash, Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, and Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski.

Havertz was brilliant during Chelsea’s league fixtures this month before the international break came, scoring four goals in three matches.

The 22-year-old’s been playing some of his best football since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, so surely has a decent chance of winning the award.

If successful, he would be the first Blues player since Eden Hazard in September 2018 to win the Premier League prize.

There has perhaps at times been a lack of individual magic from a very strong group at Chelsea, but Havertz is an attacker capable of some genius moments.

Undoubtedly, playing in the centre-forward role on a consistent basis during the last few weeks has been a big help for the German. It’s resulted in high-profile teammate Romelu Lukaku not playing as much as he would like, though.

New Chelsea talisman emerging

It does feel like in the past month Havertz is stepping into the role of the leading talisman.

Of course, there is so much quality and experience within the Blues squad in defence and midfield.

However, it’s attackers that ultimately win you games.

Havertz is showing a real confidence to take the pressure on his shoulders, and fans are starting to notice the youngster mature.
