Chelsea and England star Reece James has reacted to Blues teammate Kai Havertz’s performance in Germany’s convincing 4-2 win over Portugal on Saturday.
Prior to this game, Havertz had received a lot of criticism for his underwhelming display in the 1-0 Euro 2020 Group F opener defeat to France.
Several German footballing legends even wanted him to be dropped for Timo Werner for the Portugal game.
But Joachim Low kept his faith in the 22-year-old and it certainly paid off.
Havertz only scored one goal but was overall involved in build-up to three of the four Germany’s goals.
More importantly, he seems to have regained his confidence after the performance.
“The victory was very important for us,” Havertz said after the game (via DFB’s official website).
“I think you could see today that we have a lot of enthusiasm for the game.
“We had many chances to score and then concede the first goal through a stupid counterattack.
“But we can be satisfied. I trust my strengths and I’m happy to have contributed a goal today.
“The chances of reaching the last 16 are good, but nothing is done yet. We still have a tough game ahead of us, Hungary will demand everything from us.”
Writing on social media, Havertz further added: “We continue to fight on, with another big game next week.”
One Chelsea teammate, in particular, seems to have watched the game and been impressed by Havertz’s display.
“King Kai,” James said in the comments.
Antonio Rudiger also featured in the game, but Werner, unfortunately, was left on the bench as an unused sub.
