Frank Leboeuf is still not convinced by the defensive side of Jorginho’s game, despite the midfielder’s incredible displays in the Euro 2020-winning campaign with Italy.
It is a rather eyebrow-raising claim from Leboeuf considering Jorginho’s performance in the last few months, in particular.
Bear in mind, the 29-year-old made 25 interceptions throughout the Euro 2020, the highest record in the tournament since 1980.
Jorginho also tops the tournament’s charts in terms of distance covered (86.6 km).
Leboeuf, however, believes the former Napoli man still has a lot of flaws in his defensive game.
Well, to be fair, Leboeuf certainly knows a thing or two about defending.
“I give him credit offensively, [but] defensively, he has so many weaknesses,” the former Chelsea centre-back told ESPN FC.
“If he didn’t have [Andreas] Christensen, Thiago Silva, and [N’Golo] Kante with him, he [wouldn’t have] won the Champions League.
“If he didn’t have [Leonardo] Bonucci and [Giorgio] Chiellini with him, he [wouldn’t have] wom the Euro.
“He’s a fantastic player, he doesn’t lose any ball, he makes the football simpler, but defensively, when you’re in the middle of the park… I’m sorry.”
The one thing that Jorginho sometimes struggles with is providing a physical presence in midfield. He lacks pace but often makes it up with his reading of the game.
He might need Kante at Chelsea or Manuel Locatelli at the national team to complement his playmaking ability and provide that extra bit of energy, but recently, he has certainly been far from being a defensive hole in any team he plays for.
