Frank Leboeuf had his say on Jorginho’s penalty style after the midfielder’s missing crucial penalty against Arsenal on Saturday.
The 29-year-old has now missed two penalties in the Premier League this season in two big games against Liverpool and Arsenal (three in all competitions).
While he scored the other three out of five penalties he has taken in the competition so far, there have been questions whether goalkeepers have now studied his style.
The Italy international makes a little jump just before he kicks the ball to throw the goalkeeper’s timing off, but this also makes it difficult for him to generate any power to his penalties.
When the goalkeeper gets the direction right, like Leno did, then it suddenly becomes an easy save.
Leboeuf is clearly not a fan of Jorginho’s penalty style.
“He [Jorginho] has to stop that,” he told ESPN FC.
“When you do that and you score, everybody is going to say ‘Wow it’s nice, a good trick’.
“But when the goalkeeper stops it, you look like a fool.
“Don’t play with the goalkeepers. Shoot [it low and hard] and it’s going to be alright.”
Fellow former Chelsea player Burley thinks the penalty routine is going to be the least of Jorginho’s worries, however.
“No point in briefing somebody who has been pretty good at penalties about missing a couple,” he added.
“The only thing Jorginho needs to worry about is how to get his shin pads on quicker because he isn’t going to be playing.”
