Cesar Azpilicueta has jokingly admitted he would love to knock Chelsea teammate Mason Mount out of the World Cup.
Chelsea captain Azpilicueta, 33, is currently representing his country Spain at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Blues star Mount is part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
There’s a chance the two teammates will meet at the major tournament, but they’ll be kept apart until the semi-finals.
For England, they have reached the quarter-finals against France and will hope they can eliminate the reigning world champions.
As for Spain, they face Morocco this afternoon in the last-16 of the World Cup. Afterwards, they would face either Portugal or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Azpilicueta knock Mount out of World Cup
Azpilicueta has already helped Spain knock Germany out of the World Cup in the group stages, which was a bitter blow to club teammate Kai Havertz.
Next, he’ll want to repeat that trick against Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech.
“That would be good,” Azpilicueta laughed in the Guardian when discussing the possibility of also knocking Mount and England out of the World Cup.
“He’s (Mount) a fantastic player. England have so many good players, an infinite range of choices.”
There’s still a long way to go before there’s a chance of England vs Spain, but it would be a mouth-watering clash with lots of personal club duels.
Mount and Azpilicueta have both fallen out of the starting line-ups for their respective nations during the World Cup tournament, but remain important players in the squad.
