Chelsea star Mason Mount played 90 minutes last night for his country – but some England fans on Twitter have suggested that he plays out of position on the international stage.
Mount earned his 24th England cap last night as the Three Lions recorded a 1-1 draw away to Poland in a World Cup qualifier.
The 22-year-old, who is a regular in Gareth Southgate’s XI, started in the central number 10 position.
He’s frequently been used in a creative role directly behind England captain and Tottenham forward Harry Kane, albeit the latter likes to drop deeper.
A selection of England supporters on social media suggested last night that Mount found it difficult operating in the No.10 role, so in future would like to see him deployed elsewhere.
For Chelsea, Mount has settled on a role within Thomas Tuchel’s system at Stamford Bridge. The youngster has been slotting into an attacking role in the 3-4-2-1 system. Him and Kai Havertz appear to be favourites behind centre-forward Romelu Lukaku.
There are definitely similarities between playing a creative role at Chelsea and England’s 4-2-3-1 system, however, there are differences as well.
Mount is asked to get on the ball and be creative in both teams, but he’s still searching to find his best form when playing for his country.
He does though look a different animal for the Blues.
The main difference for the talented star is that his No.10 position for Chelsea is more as an inverted winger, so he’s given the licence to come in from the left wing far more often. This isn’t the case when he’s got Jack Grealish or Raheem Sterling alongside him in an England shirt hogging the flanks.
There are some who feel Mount doesn’t fit seamlessly into the No.10 role within England’s formation.
