Jody Morris hit out at those who continue to doubt Mason Mount’s value to Chelsea.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Morris defended the player he knows better than most from their days together at Cobham.
The former Chelsea coach witnessed Mount’s rise first hand from academy prospect to fully-fledged Premier League all-star.
He and Frank Lampard moulded Mount as a senior pro at Derby County, before stepping up his development under the Stamford Bridge spotlight.
Since making his competitive Chelsea debut against Manchester United in 2019, Mount’s career has reached heights surely even his biggest admirers couldn’t have imagined.
150 appearances for the Blues is only nine matches away, with the 50 goal contributions even closer.
A regular for club and country, the England international finished 19th in the recent Ballon d’Or rankings.
Last season, he was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season, one that included the Champions League victory.
Mount’s assist to Kai Havertz ensured Tuchel’s debut tenure ended on the highest of highs.
Morris rejects the Mount haters
However, there remains a small section of critics that simply cannot accept the 23-year-old’s deserved fame and glory.
“He’s outstanding. I think it’s a load of nonsense when I hear people talk bad about him,” Morris declared defiantly.
“He can play in a number of positions.
“He’s one of those players where, even when he was younger, you can tell him something once and you’ve never had to tell him again.
“He’s a leader on the pitch in terms of following game plans and I’m sure Tuchel has noticed that himself, Frank definitely noticed it.
“He’s not a shouter but he knows the game.”
All these traits and more make Mount such a desirable weapon to wield for any manager.
If he can find consistency in the final third, then the possibilities are endless.
Keeping fit will certainly help this issue, a problem he’s never previously had to face before this campaign.
He’s already missed a handful of games through injury, plus had to pull out of an England camp because of tooth surgery.
Get back to playing regularly again and the Mason that Morris describes will return in full force.
