Ian Wright has admitted he was left totally amazed by Mateo Kovacic’s goal at the weekend in the Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues dropped two points on Sunday by drawing 2-2 at home to rivals Liverpool in the Premier League. However, bouncing back from a two-goal deficit showed immense heart by Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Kovacic, 27, got Chelsea’s comeback rolling with a stunning goal. The £40million star scored a crazy volley against Liverpool that saw him strike the ball from the edge of the box when both his feet were off the ground.

It was only his fourth goal in 158 appearances for the club, making the outrageous finish even more spectacular.

Wright has been waxing lyrical about the midfielder’s wonder strike:

“It’s one of those goals that I could watch over and over again simply because of the difficulty of what he’s doing. The height it’s coming, he’s going backwards, and when he actually hits this he’s off the ground. This is a magnificent goal of the highest order,” Wright said.

Kovacic becoming even more important at Chelsea

Of course, Blues fans know how good Kovacic has been in recent years for the team even when the statistics aren’t always in his favour.

His ability to break lines with his dribbling is invaluable, plus he’s aggressive in is defensive work.

The Croatian is now adding the end product, too.

Kovacic is even more important to Tuchel’s XI if he can continue contributing going forward.

He’s now got two goals and five assists in just 13 league appearances, so is a vital feature in the team’s offensive play right now.

Kovacic can be just effective as senior teammates N’Golo Kante and Jorginho in the centre of the park when he’s on form.
