There’s been another frustrating update regarding the fitness of Chelsea captain Reece James this week, which has prompted the same response from several people in the club’s fanbase.
Reece James, 24, is still waiting to make his first appearance of the new season. He was unavailable at the start because of a suspension, but there’s also been a hamstring injury problem he’s been recovering from.
The Sun claimed this week that James has suffered a delay in his injury return. Apparently, the right-back’s issue has not healed as quickly as possible, so the club’s medical staff have been cautious by putting his comeback on hold.

Chelsea fans suggest Levi Colwill should replace Reece James as captain
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media have suggested that James should be stripped of the captain’s armband due to his frequent injuries. As a solution, many would like to see 21-year-old Blues defender Levi Colwill step into the senior role.
Here are some Chelsea fans on X suggesting Colwill becomes captain:
One fan said: “It’s time to make Levi captain! Never going to get a full season out of Reece I’m afraid. Colwill could captain us for the best part of 10years or until an offer come in and the pure profit button is pressed.”
Another wrote: “Colwill captain now. On his day he’s (James) our best player and it’s not even close. Issue is, it’s never his day. Always injured. Feel for him but tough decisions need to be made!”
A third user posted: “Levi Colwill should be permanent captain of Chelsea. Adore Reece James but his unreliability is a major concern I’ll be honest. Levi is a born leader and massively respected… he deserves his chance… maybe an unpopular opinion but still.”
One supporter shared: “I love Reece with my heart but give the captains armband to Colwill.”
Another claimed: “Just give the armband to Colwill.”
Should Levi Colwill be captain?
We like the idea of Colwill wearing the armband, especially because he’s taking giant strides in his game already this season, but it feels like he’s quite far down that particular pecking order.
Enzo Maresca has suggested Colwill is a leader moving forward, but we’ve seen Enzo Fernandez or Moises Caicedo captain the side in James’ absence recently.
The ideal scenario would be for James to be a fully-fit player. However, we can understand the need for the captain conversation because the full-back misses so much football, which is not ideal for a club skipper.
We spotted Colwill leading the pre-match huddle on the pitch before Chelsea’s win over Bournemouth at the weekend, so there’s clearly something there in terms of leadership. While we feel it might be a bit early to give him the armband and extra responsibility, the ball-playing centre-back has the backing of many supporters.
