Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu is now starting to get some regular minutes in Southampton colours following his loan move to St Mary’s.

Chelsea decided in the summer to help the development of Lesley Ugochukwu, 20, by sending him on a season-long loan to Premier League rivals Southampton.

The French defensive midfielder is now starting to get a run in Russell Martin’s side. In fact, speaking recently via the Southern Daily Echo, Martin insisted that Ugochukwu is only going to get better.

Ugochukwu was named in Southampton’s starting line-up on Tuesday night for the Carabao Cup third round tie away at Everton. Eventually, the Saints ended up winning 6-5 in a penalty shootout as the teams were locked together at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Chelsea fans react to Lesley Ugochukwu performance

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media were really impressed by Ugochukwu’s individual contribution in the cup versus Everton. In fact, many of the fanbase have been saying that the 20-year-old loanee is a quality player with so much potential.

Here are some Blues fans on X raving about Ugochukwu’s latest display for Southampton:

One fan said: “Ugochukwu’s development in a year is ridiculous. I didn’t think he was bad last season, but I felt his signing was redundant. Now, this guy looks he he can be some ridiculous colossus mixed with a nimble box bomber.”

Another wrote: “His improvement on the ball is rapid. If he stays injury free, this season will be huge for him.”

A third user posted: “He’s so good on the ball, he makes good tackles. He’s also press resistant and his ability in tight spaces as well when players are on him. Really wish we kept him in the squad because of his physical profile but I’m really happy his development is going well at Southampton.”

One supporter claimed: “He is so good.”

Another shared: “This guy we must keep in the future. You can see shades of [Nemanja] Matic.”

We feel like Ugochuwku would’ve been an asset to Chelsea’s first-team squad this campaign, but the long-term picture may be far better if he gets a full year playing and growing with Southampton.
