Mario Melchiot claims Chelsea star is making Frank Lampard’s job easy

Mario Melchiot has explained that Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud is making it easy right now for manager Frank Lampard to start him every game.

Despite beginning the season out of the side, Giroud has forced his way back into the starting XI in the last month and of late has been the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge.

The left-footed target man now has eight goals in 14 games across all competitions this season, which included a strike in midweek during the 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He’s a man on a mission to stay in the France squad for next summer’s European Championships, plus he’s still hunting down the international record to be his nation’s all-time top scorer.

Melchiot claims that in his current form Giroud is undroppable from the Chelsea team.

“How do you take a scoring striker out of the team? Giroud has scored then he scores another goal, now he scores again. The guy is in hot form,” Melchiot told talkSPORT.

“He is telling him, ‘Frank, I am the scoring guy for your team, put me in’. Frank isn’t going to think, ‘no, I can’t put him in’.

“He has to put him in because he scores the goals… He needs to lead the line at this point.”

Giroud is rightfully starting games right now as the number nine, where he’s being prolific in front of goal and is showing why he’s such an underrated player in world football.

Aged 34, he’s showing no signs of dealing as his game has never relied on pace and right now he looks Chelsea’s best attacking outlet.

But there is a lot of discussion about Timo Werner which could effect him.

With 24-year-old Blues attacker Werner struggling at times as a winger, there is a strong argument that can be made to restore the German to a more favoured central striker position.

Giroud may be in possession of a starting spot right now, but perhaps he’s not as cemented in the position as it seems.
