Mario Melchiot claims Chelsea star is the Premier League player with the most to prove this season

There are quite a few big-money Premier League signings who will have a point to prove this season, including a few from Chelsea.

The likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk, for example, joined Chelsea for huge fees but have not really lived up to their price tags yet.

The former was criticised for his performances in midfield last season. Nigel Reo-Coker was critical of Fernandez and Moises Caicedo as a partnership in the middle of the park.

As for Mudryk, he failed to produce the kind of numbers that you would expect from a £90m forward, with the Ukrainian managing to score just five goals in 31 Premier League outings.

Enzo Fernandez has point to prove at Chelsea

Out of Fernandez, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Darwin Nunez, former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot was asked which Premier League player had the most to prove this season.

In response, Melchiot answered Fernandez. Speaking on ESPN FC, he said: “I probably will pick Enzo. I don’t think that his season was that great as well at Chelsea because the team wasn’t that great. If I have to pick anyone in the four, then I will pick him.”

As Melchiot stated, as a whole, Chelsea were not great during the 2023/24 campaign, with the club failing to qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League.

However, Fernandez has promised Chelsea fans that the team will “battle” everywhere they go this season.

No excuses for Enzo Fernandez this season

Last term, Fernandez was playing through injury. However, he has now undergone surgery, fully recovered from that and is being coached by a manager who has quickly become known for being ball possession obsessed.

Fernandez has also been at Chelsea for a year-and-a-half now. With all of that in mind, he really needs to deliver and consistently, being a midfielder who cost his club more than £100m.

He is not the only one who needs to improve at Chelsea, though. Again, Mudryk has not had the best time in England either, so the 23-year-old also has to step up. Arsenal still retain an interest in Mudryk after chasing him before his move to Chelsea, but nothing is expected to happen this summer.
