Martin Keown has claimed that Chelsea frontman Romelu Lukaku is “proving people wrong” every week.

Lukaku’s reputation in England has always been as a goalscorer, but question marks over his overall play has often clouded some people’s opinions of him.

The 28-year-old re-signed for Chelsea in the summer, though, as the complete striker.

He’s started with four goals in six games for the Blues and looked mightily impressive in everything he does.

There may be some that are waiting for chinks to appear in the Belgium international’s armour. However, he now looks the finished article after two years developing his game further with Inter Milan.

Keown has praised Lukaku ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League home match against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

“[Man City] selecting the right sitter is vitally important. It’s imperative for that player to stop all the service into Romelu Lukaku’s feet today,” Keown wrote for the Daily Mail.

“It’s like the prodigal son has returned with Lukaku. He is back to show why Chelsea should never have let him leave in the first place and he’s proving people wrong, each and every week. He now holds the ball up brilliantly and looks like scoring whenever he shoots.”

Romelu Lukaku the Chelsea talisman

If there are any doubters still towards Lukaku, they are simply living in the past.

His spell with Inter highlights what a great footballer he’s become. He scored 64 goals and made 16 assists in 95 appearances for the Italian giants.

The left-footed centre-forward has already improved Chelsea going forward with his sheer presence in the final third, which allows teammates around him to thrive.

It’s amazing to see how quickly he’s become a talisman in this Chelsea XI and he looks like one of the first names picked by his manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Blues are currently preparing for today’s lunchtime kick-off against Man City at Stamford Bridge, which is a huge showdown between two potential league title contenders.

There is the added spice to the fixture considering Chelsea have won the last three meetings between the teams, including the Champions League final in May.
