Maurizio Sarri believes 'refined' Chelsea star deserves to be Ballon d'Or winner candidate

Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes “refined” Blues star Jorginho deserves to be in the Ballon d’Or discussion if he helps Italy to win the Euro 2020.

If anyone understands Jorginho better than everyone else, it would be Sarri.

The Italian tactician brought Jorginho alongside him from Napoli to Chelsea in 2018. At first, it was not all rosy.

Some Chelsea fans were not impressed by Sarri’s deploying Jorginho as a lone holding midfielder, pushing N’Golo Kante as a No.8 and fan-favourite Cesc Fabregas almost completely out of the picture.

Jorginho has won many more Chelsea fans over since, particularly with his solid displays in Thomas Tuchel’s “double No.6” system.

Not only at Chelsea, but Jorginho has also established himself as one of the first names in the Italy team-sheet, and so far one of the outstanding players at the Euro 2020.

Sarri claims now people have begun understanding what Jorginho brings to the team.

“If he wins the European Championship [with Italy] as well, it is clear that he would become one [Ballon d’Or candidate],” the Lazio manager told Sport Italia journalist Alfredo Pedulla.

“He is a refined player, probably not understood by everyone.

“You have to put your eyes on him and only watch him in the game.

“He is so good and intelligent that he makes everything look easy, rarely something spectacular stays in your eyes. That is his greatness.”
