Micah Richards suggested that Chelsea would’ve been delighted that Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku got on the scoresheet against Luton Town last night.

Speaking on the BBC after the Blues just edged past Luton 3-2 yesterday, Richards said the away dressing room must’ve been buzzing to see their two forwards finally find the target together.

Story of the night for Werner and Romelu

Werner and Lukaku started alongside each other for the first time since the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg versus Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Between the London derby victory and Wednesday’s narrow win, the pair had only scored twice combined, both from the boot of the Belgian.

Therefore, expectations were extremely high for them to increase their tally at the home of the Championship outfit.

From Chelsea’s first-half performance at Kenilworth Road, it seemed the duo’s wait was going to go on.

Thomas Tuchel’s team found themselves 2-1 down at the break, having gone behind from a corner with two minutes on the clock.

Saul Niguez equalised just shy of the half-hour mark, yet Luton went ahead again before the interval, aided by some questionable defending from Malang Sarr.

Lukaku had a shot saved by Harvey Isted, but he nor Werner really looked menacing in the opening exchanges.

This pattern continued into the second stage of the match, until the German attacker collected a pint-point pass from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and slotted his effort into the bottom corner.

From that moment on, Werner’s confidence grew; his touches were softer, his control more astute.

He then assisted Lukaku’s winner 12 minutes from time with a low cross that really couldn’t be missed.

Time for Timo and Lukaku to start linking up

The celebration of Chelsea’s club-record signing said all that needed to be said about the relief ringing around the blue section of the stadium.

“Fair play to Werner, he’s had a difficult time. If there were a couple of players you want to score today: Lukaku and Werner,” said Richards on two goal scorers.

Aside from rippling the net, that was only the second occasion all season Werner had assisted Lukaku, with the reverse exchange yet to happen.

Before the campaign began, many hoped they would blossom into an awesome strike force.

That has yet to flourish fully, although hopefully, their latest outing will instigate a spark between them.
