Michael Owen claims that Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy was “outstanding” in the League Cup final defeat to Liverpool.

Unfortunately, the Blues were beaten on penalties during Sunday afternoon’s dramatic Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The contest somehow lasted 120 minutes with the score at 0-0, as both teams missed glaring chances and had goals chalked off by VAR for offside. Eventually, Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties.

Mendy, 29, was outstanding in-between the sticks after getting the nod from his manager Thomas Tuchel to start the final. He made several memorable saves, including one from point-blank range to deny Sadio Mane.

The Senegal international was substituted off in the closing stages of extra-time to allow Kepa Arrizabalaga to take the gloves for the penalty shootout, something which has worked in the past. However, Kepa was unable to save any of Liverpool’s 11 penalties before blasting his own spot-kick over the bar.

Owen was keen to highlight what a special performance from Chelsea’s number one Mendy, though.

Chelsea have the world’s best GK

Yes, Mendy deserves to be top of the tree when talking about the world’s best goalkeeper on current form.

The colossus shot-stopper has been immense for well over a year now since Tuchel arrived, and it was an absolute masterclass from him at Wembley.

His reflexes and presence at the back is a serious throwback to the days of Petr Cech.

The recruitment decision to bring him to Stamford Bridge from Rennes in 2020 is one of the club’s best pieces of business in recent memory.
