Chelsea ace Mason Mount was given the lowest rating among the England players by Sky Sports for his “anonymous” performance in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.
It is fair to say that it was a rather underwhelming display from the 22-year-old, which is quite a surprise given how consistent he has been in the last couple of seasons.
He played in a familiar left winger role in a 3-4-2-1 formation, albeit slightly wider than his role under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.
Unfortunately, Mount just could hardly make any impact in the 99 minutes he was on the pitch.
He failed to register any key pass or any shot. While defensively, he did not make any successful tackle or interception.
Sky Sports even gave him a 4/10 rating, the lowest among the England team.

“Utterly, painfully anonymous,” the media described Mount’s performance in the final.
“Could not make any sort of impact or influence either in England’s wing-back system or when reverting to a midfield three.
“Difficult to understand, in the ultimate reckoning, how he stayed on the pitch for as long as he did, having done so little.”

To be fair, England’s defensive game plan after grabbing an early lead did not really help Mount or any of their attackers.
But it was still baffling how Mount stayed very wide despite Luke Shaw’s clearly providing the width as well on the left.
We know that he is capable of performing in a big final — he showed that in the Champions League already.
Unfortunately for Mount, Italy’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Leonardo Bonucci simply had a better game and managed to shut him down.
