‘Need much more’: Frank Leboeuf says 25-year-old Chelsea player really needs to start playing much better

Chelsea legend Frank Leboeuf still wants to see more from Marc Cucurella despite his good form of late.

Marc Cucurella has helped Chelsea to take seven points from their last three games, starting two of those matches out of position.

But Leboeuf, speaking on ESPN FC after his old side’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal over the weekend, still thinks the 25-year-old needs to up his game.

Cucurella has been playing at right-back, but he was able to start the Arsenal match at left-back after Axel Disasi was left on the bench, which resulted in Levi Colwill shuffling across to centre-back.

Cucurella still has some doubters following his big-money move from Brighton & Hove Albion to Chelsea last summer.

Discussing the Spaniard on ESPN FC, Leboeuf said: “He did well last time, last game as well, he did well today [Saturday], but I will need much more from a €65m transfer.”

Marc Cucurella does not deserve too much criticism at this moment in time

Cucurella deserves some leniency right now. He has been playing at right-back, which is a completely foreign position to him, and has not done terribly there.

And when you look at the Arsenal game, the former Brighton man dealt with Bukayo Saka quite well and had no real role in Chelsea’s collapse towards the end of the match.

He could not stop Saka’s ball coming into the Blues’ box for the Gunners’ equaliser, but Malo Gusto should have been on Leandro Trossard at the back post before the Belgian’s goal.

Chelsea did sign Cucurella for around £60m, as reported by BBC Sport, so it is understandable if some want to see more from him.

If he can stay in the team, then he will have further opportunities to show everyone what he is really capable of. And with Ben Chilwell currently out injured, maybe the left-back will get just that in the coming weeks.
