‘Not a finisher’: ESPN pundit says £50m player isn’t the answer to Chelsea’s problems

Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol can just not see where the goals are going to come from for Chelsea.

Raheem Sterling is currently Chelsea’s top scorer in the Premier League after finding the back of the net three times, but Steve Nicol, speaking on ESPN FC, does not think the winger is the solution to the Blues’ issues.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggled in front of goal once again last weekend, failing to score in their 2-0 defeat to Brentford.

And things do not get any easier for them in the Premier League, with a trip to north London to take on league leaders Tottenham Hotspur up next.

Raheem Sterling not a finisher

In Nicol’s eyes, Sterling is simply not someone who is going to finish all of his chances for Chelsea.

Discussing the 28-year-old on ESPN FC, Nicol said: “Come on, where are the goals coming from? Sterling? How long have we said Sterling’s not a finisher?”

Raheem Sterling not enough

Even if Sterling can start to replicate the numbers he produced at Manchester City before his £50m move (BBC Sport) to Chelsea, the Blues will need more than that.

A club of their stature and after all of the money they have spent, need to be aiming for the Premier League title.

To get anywhere near that, they are going to need at least a couple of goalscorers in their team.

At this moment in time, though, Chelsea are obviously far away from the title and just need to concentrate on getting back into the top four.

One player who can grab at least 20 goals in a single Premier League season may be able to help them do that.

However, while Sterling has shown signs that he is returning to his best this term, he has still not been prolific enough and is unlikely to become the prolific forward Pochettino needs.

Perhaps Christopher Nkunku could be that man when you look at his track record at RB Leipzig. Another ESPN pundit, Shaka Hislop, is actually backing the Frenchman to transform Chelsea’s attack when he returns from injury.
